What is regenerative landscaping?

Regenerative landscaping is more than just designing beautiful outdoor spaces—it’s about creating landscapes that mimic natural processes. By applying the holistic design methodologies of permaculture, we create resilient ecosystems that restore soil health, conserve water, and support biodiversity. This approach transforms your yard into a thriving, self-sustaining habitat that reduces waste, enhances climate resilience, and nurtures life, ensuring your outdoor space not only looks stunning but also contributes to a healthier planet.

Potential elements for a regenerative landscape in Austin

Which picture captures most water? Guess and find out!

Pick your option

Click on the picture above that you think captures the most water! The answer will be displayed here after you choose.

That is not the correct answer!

Even though above-ground rainwater harvesting is one of the most popular ways to store rainwater for use when it's dry -and rightly so-, it is not the picture that shows the highest potential for water capture. Try again!

That is not the correct answer!

Underground rainwater storage is an option when space is an issue or when you simply do not want to see a raintank. This picture, however, does not show the highest water capture potential. Besides, underground storage is costly and installing it can be disruptive to its surroundings. Try again!

That is correct!

A healthy living soil with lots of biodiversity and organic matter acts like a sponge and can soak up and store loads of water! In this picture, the total water capture potential is thus far greater than in the other pictures! During dry spells, however, it is smart to supplement this with active water harvesting systems such as raintanks. Learn more about this down below.

That is not the correct answer!

Natural ponds are amazing! They're both beautiful to look at and they provide ecosystem services such as cooling the surroundings in summer and attracting bugs for pest-control. But, since they are filled year-round they can not 'capture' any new rainfall, so this picture does not capture the most water. Try again!

About Me

A Texas non-native

[but highly adapted ;-)]

My name is Steven Kramer and I am a permaculture landscaper from the Netherlands, soon living in Austin Texas together with my wife (a true Austin Native!). I design and create natural urban spaces, together with a network of local professionals. With my Master’s in Sustainability and background in permaculture and food forestry, I’d love to help you transform your own outdoor space to Harvest the Rain!

Over the past three years, I’ve immersed myself in learning about Austin’s unique environment, building connections with local professionals, and seeking guidance from experienced mentors to ensure a seamless transition to Texas.

In the Netherlands, I was a part of:

Moestuinman - Creating Adventurous Schoolyards

Moestuinman is a collective of freelancers working together to transform the classic Dutch concrete schoolyards into adventurous, green and waterharvesting playgrounds.

Maintenance

Regenerative maintenance is not yet part of our services, but we are actively considering adding it, as maintenance is a crucial component of regenerative design. This type of care requires a deeper understanding, which is often lacking among traditional maintenance service providers. Interested in regenerative maintenance? Let us know! If there’s enough interest, we’ll be happy to add it to our services in the future.

Food forest design

Interested in growing your own food without the hassle of vegetable garden?

A food forest is a perennial, nature-inspired system designed to produce a diverse array of resources, with food being the most abundant! Imagine fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, herbs, edible salad greens, and so much more—all working together as a self-sustaining ecosystem. Producing food without the hard work of a vegetable garden!

In Europe, a minimum of one acre is required to classify as a “food forest,” but the principles of food forest design can be adapted to any scale. This makes food forest gardens an excellent addition to any Austin landscape, offering beauty, productivity, and ecological balance.
